Adult Sunday School text: Thirsty for God

I am very excited about the return of our regular Sunday schedule on September 7 and will also mean the resumption of Adult Sunday School.

I am also excited about the book we will be reading and discussing.  It is, Thirsty for God: A Brief History of Christian Spirituality by Bradley Holt.  This is a revised second edition published in 2006.  I have chosen it for a number of reasons.  First, when the Beta Vitality Committee did the research and demographics about our church the area where we showed a need for growth was in spiritual disciplines – of spirituality in general.  It also indicated that people in our demographic are, to use the title of the book, “thirsty for God.”  The second reason is a more personal one and that has to do with my love for history, and my belief that when we are more knowledgeable and connected with where we come from, we will not only know ourselves better but be better equipped to engage others in the world and our own future.  Because this book introduces historical figures and ideas associated with them, it may appear to be an academic book.  However, its real focus is on the development of our spiritual lives.  At the end of each chapter is a list of exercises or disciplines.  My hope is that experimenting with these disciplines will be a part of our time together.  I also hope that sharing about our own experience will be a part of our discussions.  The text may be the framework of our discussions, but the focus must be on our lives together.

I will order a number of books.  Please let me know if you would like me to order you a book.  You may also order them yourselves at Cokesbury or Amazon.

These past few years we have had wonderful meetings and have grown in numbers.  This may mean a different format for this year.  For example, I will take some time at the beginning of each time to introduce the topic and questions for the day and then split everyone into smaller groups to be led by facilitators.  I will move amongst the groups and perhaps gather together at the end to summarize what we have talked about.  I ask for your feedback and patience as we enter into this new format.  It is a great problem to have so many people!

This Sunday School class is an arena for the transformation of individuals and our Church.  I enthusiastically encourage everyone to attend.   If you have any questions please contact me.  Pastor Jim
