Adult Sunday School resumes Sundays at 10:00

The Adult Sunday School class meets on Sunday morning at 10:00 am (the same time the children have Sunday School) in the Centrum.  This fall we will be reading a book by Jim Wallis (of the Sojourners community in DC) entitled On God’s Side: What Religion Forgets and Politics Hasn’t Learned about Serving the Common Good.

Wallis grew up in a very strict evangelical home.  He retains some of the beliefs of his upbringing but he has also been transformed by the radical idea that to be a follower of Jesus Christ means to….. well, follow Jesus Christ.  And he has taken that belief all the way into politics.  I remember when I started out in pastoral ministry and being told that politics and religion don’t mix.  That was hard for me because my image of Jesus is one who challenged the powers that be – he was political.  Wallis avoids being partisan – he is critical of both the right and the left, and he tries to keep his sight on what God would really want.  We may disagree with him as we read this book, but I do think it will be a good spiritual practice to ask the same questions Wallis is asking – how do we follow Jesus in our current socio-economic and political environment?  I chose this book for this time because it is an election year.  If I had done this at my first church in Spokane I’m sure someone would have called the District Superintendent – please don’t do this.  I think we can manage some pretty good conversations and I am looking forward to it.  Everyone is welcome and if you have any questions about it please email me.  I have purchased a number of books – please let me know if you want one.  Otherwise I will leave you to Amazon, Half Price Books or the University Bookstore.  P.Jim
